50 Cent Terrorizes Twitter

Rap artist 50 Cent went on a Twitter tirade last night, spewing profanity and an endless stream of obscene photos after apparently discovering for the first time that he has a Twitter account with over 2.9 million followers. Surprise! The rapper’s account is usually run by a PR rep, but at some point yesterday 50 Cent decided he wanted to have some fun/shoot himself in the foot/vent to his 2.9 million followers.

While it might not have been his greatest move, it did score him a new nickname: Twitty Cent

Sorry Fiddy fans, this was not a hack. After numerous X-rated posts, Twitpic stepped in and blocked his account. This may have stopped him from posting any more Kim Kardashian burger buns pics, but it certainly didn’t slow down the stream of f-bombs and irreverent slams about pretty much everyone else on his record label (Kat Stacks, Fat Joe, Allhiphop, Soulja Boy, and Miss Info, to name a few).

He must be doing something right...In the four months since you posted this Twitty Cent's added almost a million more followers (3.7 million total). Personally, I prefer old school to gangster rap. Anyone with images of guns on their wallpaper pretty much guarantees I won't be following them--ever. Thanks for the 411, Sean. Happy New Year!

Im not in shocked at all. I think he did this for publicity. His record sales have not been nearly as good as they were years ago when he first came out. He is trying to sell records. I must say though...as much as I loved that first album it's not on my ipod and Im pretty sure I will not be adding it either. I think he needs to give up that approach back into the rap game and stick to movies now. He's too old to be acting like a jack-butt to sell records.

It can be a real disaster when PR reps try and build a brand that is incongruent with the real thing. That's why PR gets the reputation of being "spin doctors". As a publicist, I'm disappointed to know someone even wants to build his brand. Was this good for his brand? Sadly, he doesn't seem to have lost any of his followers. As a citizen, I'm all for democracy and the right to be who you are. As a mother and a business woman, I'm disgusted this narcissistic misogynist makes money spreading such nasty messages.

50 is so full of himself he thinks this IS his brand and antics like this will only reinforce his brand persona.He is past the pont of brand suicide, there's not much more to kill!

I don't think it's either a career boost or suicide. I've never liked him, so this just reinforces how brainless I think he is. Those who like him will probably think it's cool to see him being real. I doubt it'll gain him any new fans, although it might gain him new followers (everyone loves a train wreck!).

Twitter is supposed to help give people communicate, which gives insight into who people are or how people think. Typically, people use it to discuss their industry or learn from peers. If 50 wants to go nuts on his acct., I saw go for it. I'd argue he is still achieving the big picture goal of giving insight into his personality - good or bad. Reading David's comment above: to lose respect for him over this just means you had a false sense of respect for him to start with because you didn't have this sort of insight previously. To answer your question, I feel like this is just a normal guy being normal (well, to whatever degree you consider him normal). I don't consider it outlandish. For people that dislike it, there is an unfollow button under his picture. Interesting post Sean - thanks! @NLawhead

There's two sides to 50 Cent and you never know which one you're going to get. I often listen or watch his interviews because he loves to discuss business and gives an interesting look inside the music and, sometimes, the movie business. I'm not surprised he took Twitter like that though. 50 will use any outlet he can to berate his "enemies." This is 50 being "real." However, I've seen much worse on Twitter from other rappers, like The Game and Fabolous. This is why I don't follow rappers.
