How to use your facebook wall the correct way.
“Cutting thru the App Crap on Facebook”!

Your Facebook wall is an important piece of real estate for you and or your business. In this video I will demonstrate why you should clean it up and make it a space that works for you to drive business and add value – by removing a lot of the crap that is cluttering up your wall and making people click away.

Think of your Facebook wall as your blog or website – it serves a similar purpose and probably gets as much traffic. It adds credbility, can establish you as a thought leader in your niche, shows social proof and much more. It’s a space that you want people spending time on and not being driven away by annoying third party applications that are cluttering your wall now.

Or worse clicking to see what photo or status update you made a comment on or liked and leaving your facebook wall to visit someone else’s wall. You can remove those updates. You should remove those updates and trails of activity on facebook.

The reason people spend so much time on facebook is simple – they get lost in it. If they come to your wall – don’t entice them to leave, keep them there as long as you can. By cleaning up your wall (removing activity, removing comments, etc) you stand the best chance to captivate them and build the relationship or connection with you further.

Check out this video I made for you to demonstrate my point
“How to clean up your facebook wall and why you should”

Thanks for the tips. As the reseller of the infamous Tenga sex toys, our small team at tengatango.com try to make our FaceBook wall looking professional as you suggested. The challenge is to remove spam comments.

Good point Sean, I do the same every now and then, especially on my group page where people spam with mlm stuff. i don't mind links to blog posts and free stuff that is actually of value, but the rest just looks like someone took a dump on your page...

Thanks Sean ! Very usefull post! I'll clean my wall right now. Hate those ridiculous apps! All the best, Luíza de Medeiros.

Great! Thanks for the tips Sean. I am wondering how to do business on Facebook. I am confused with when you you get people to your profile page and when to your fan page and when do you know the difference?

Hi Sean, Great video and post. I personally couldn't agree with you more, I can't stand 3rd party apps. Unfortunately for me, tones of my friends love them and always tell me about. I always try and keep my profile clean and my friend news feed as well. This way I can keep track of the conversations more easily as well as having more deep and meaningful conversations with my friends and connections. To go even further, sometimes you don't want certain people to see your wall or status updates. I use lists to selectively share my Facebook information with specific lists. E.g I have a list for business connections - so I can select who won't see my Facebook status updates as some of them are quite personal. List are great because you can choose who sees a particular status or wall post by selecting a list when you post that particular item. Looks like you used Jing to record the video. How's that working out for you? Illiya

Hi Sean, I'm new to all this marketing, as I am in a spiritual business niche. I'm struggling to balance authenticity with marketing - as I want to provide spiritual guidance and yet I also want to make money on the items I endorse! Anyway, my question is: I added a fan page to my personal facebook page. Can I separate them now and keep my same company name, Art of Living Happy? Being tied to my personal page is causing some issues. Thanks for your help!!! Blessings, Lisa Jones

Sean: I will be looking forward to a revised Twixplode to come out soon after Twitter makes all of the major changes this September 2010. They sound significant and definitively in the favor of Twitter marketers. Hub

Very well done, Sean (My son spells his name the same way). I meet so many small business owners that are new to social media and afraid to make mistakes that will hurt their business and personal reputations. They actually become paralyzed from this fear and either hold themselves back or avoid social media, completely. Obviously, they are doing themselves, their businesses and their customers a great disservice! Your video will be a big help and I am going to make them aware of it. THANK YOU. Marc

Hey Sean, As always, great stuff from you. As the old saying goes "you only get one chance to make a first impression", so what you allow on your wall will say a lot about you. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and expertise.

Great post. I think it is important to check my wall to delete anything offensive that might be there. That could really make me look unprofessional.

Good one Sean, I hear you on that bro. I make sure that I only have relevant and valuable content on there, all those other promotions and "games" "gifts" etc get's deleted if I feel it doesn't contribute to what's going on.

Hi, Sean, that's great video to share, however, I am hard-of-hearing, it really hard to me to catch it all because of the music in the background. The good thing I can catch is when you keep saying "crap, crap, crap" LOL -Darlene

Nice post! I totally agree about the 3rd party app updates feeling like spam!!

Thanks for the great advice. I like Twitter (websitesperth) but don't find Facebook so user friendly...this has certainly helped to motivate me to get grow my Facebook page and connect with the right people!

First off, Sean your dry delivery is sensational. My two favorite quotes are, "...Makes me sick to look at my wall and see it this way..." and, "...do I really care that you're starting a food fight with me and are sending me a pinkberry frayo? Sorry Jenna but you're one of the biggest offenders and you are going to be removed as a friend as soon as I'm done with this video." Well done, Sean. I just cleaned house myself and enjoyed your wit.

Great Video Sean, good infor, am going to my account and make some changes now!

Nice video! I really hate all that spam that ends up on the wall of countless Facebook users so this is definitely a need.

Hey, thanks for lession. It's good to know use the facebook better. Really thanks from Brazil.

Thanks for the comment! Wish I was in Brazil...

I got a "Page not found" error from Screencast when I clicked on the video. Hmm...could it be my firewall?

Thanks for the heads up - called screencast this morning and they were having server issues. It was working by 8am when I called, but again thanks for the heads up.

Sean, Thanks so much for the video! I have been annoyed the last couple of days myself with people posting things on my wall. That's the one think I don't like about facebook, I wish there was some way to choose whether you can allow people to post ANYTHING whatsoever on your wall but I don't think there is a permanent solution to it. I like facebook and you want to connect with people but alot of people are there just to play games. But I agree with you to keep our pages clean and then eventually people will get the hint. Thanks for posting an excellent video! Great work! Nickahl

Great video Sean. I agree with you that your FB wall is your first impression with someone getting to know you and you only have one first impression. thanks for putting it out there.. Mike aka mykgio

Thanks Mike, I think people don't think about it enoug. I appreciate the feedback!

Sean, I love the music in the background. This is a great tip. I'm cleaning my wall up right now. I hope your Argentina trip was safe and fun. I wish I was there with you. I haven't been back to Buenos Aires since 1994. I'm dying to go back. Later.

it helps that you are so damn good looking!

Sean, this could not have been a more timely release of information. Thank You for taking the time to let us all know about the "value" of our page on facebook. I find myself becoming more and more picky about the "3rd Party" information that others feel they need to share. Also I find myself "tending" to my page and doing some clean up more and more. Again great post. PS Love the fact that I can hear you out on the back yard deck "doing work"...Peace be with you!

Hey Mike, Much appreciated! Delete it all - including your own updates of activity on others wall and apps and what not! Keep em on your page, you have worked hard to get them there - dont give em reason to leave!

Thanks for the great article! The apps drive me crazy! Off to clean up my page right now - thanks for the info.

bphzo (Hello) Sean Great tips on Facebook, that is my next venture. I am working on this today! Have a great day. I will need more tips so think of me when you come up with things that I should be doing, I am new to computers. Megwetch (Thank You) David

Loved the video - a fix, but drastic. Sometimes friends and family get rolled up in the garbage. I can't just kick them out. Just as teenage relatives often disclose more of their ongoing hormone bursts with the rest of the world - can't kick them out neither, just "hide". A better way (I think) of getting rid of the unwanted apps - is to click on account, then application settings, and remove the 'X' next to the unwanted applications and they disappear. No-one's feeling will get hurt that way. :)

Sean, Very useful info, I never thought of my facebook as mine. But just like your home, you would not let people trash it. Your facebook page is one room of your online home need to keep it all clean since it represents you and your brand.

"Clean up your facebook wall and let it start working for you" "Make sure your facebook wall is really working for you" Only 60 and 54 characters respectively, plenty left for links and retweeting!

Your Facebook Wall: Clear the Clutter Thanks for the content brother. Always insightful @JustinSchenck @JuttBug

Sean, Per your request, new title "Cutting thru the App Crap on Facebook"! You rock, thanks for ALL your great tips and advice always! Dawn

Dawn - you win. Thanks for the great suggestion. FYI- I made it a sub headline - because I'm getting some google love from the original. Thanks again, Sean

Your Facebook wall is a Window on you! Would be my suggestion as a title for your Blog on the Facebook wall.

Sean-nice job. Article title "the writing on the wall" but I think yours is more descriptive. I am constantly researching how to make my business wall better. Thank you for the great input and info! @kathieLB

This post needs a new title, one thats more tweetable or enticing. Leave your best title as a reply to this comment and the winner gets a $20 amazon g.c. Open for 1 hour (till 1am est feb. 16th) you have a good chance at winning (I'm guessing the odds will be 1 in 10)

"Count how many times CPMcKittrick shows up on screen!:-)" LoL! Wait! That's not a title, just what I was thinking;-)! "Why nobody likes your APP in their stream." ? "FB apps not accepted at this time (ever)." ? "FB BSers need not APPly" ? "APPly yourself. Just not on my wall". ? "Don't APP on me!" ? p.s. If I win, skip the amazon. Credit me towards my own copy of Twixplode!! ;-) Five days in the Twit-pokey bit the big one:-O!!

Loved it! Even if it's just "your page" - I started using mine for me to keep in touch with my mates. Reality is, that as I post about my life, which includes work, there's crossover. Don't want anyone I've met in that area seeing fluffy bunnies.... And quite frankly, I've more interesting content to find. Cheers!

Kristen, great point. Someone told me once - "If it happens in Vegas it ends up on youtube, Facebook & Twitter". Doesn't exactly apply to what your saying (not even close actually) but I think does create a visual. In this day and age - you should always be considerate of any information you post anywhere online. There is definitely crossover and in reality, people will judge you or form opinions about you based on the content on "your page". Fair or not -its a reality.

Great video, Sean. I think this is a HUGE area of improvement for a lot of people. Facebook, for some reason, seems to be the networking/social media platform of entry for a lot of social media newbies. Therefore, it ends up as a kind of conglomeration of serious, efficient networkers (like yourself!) and casual, confused, just-for-fun Facebookers. That being said, I also think that many folks truly trying to professionally network with Facebook get caught up in the fun and fluffy stuff, not realizing the impact it can have on their page and their personal brand. Keep it professional, keep it clean, and most importantly, don't be afraid to block out the junk!

Annie - great feedback and I share your thoughts! That video was not meant for the "just for fun" facebookers. More for those who are serious about their business or line of work and maybe don't realize the value of it or consider the impact the clutter creates. Thanks for your comment - love seeing you around here! btw - hows your plan progressing? You still employed by someone else?

You had me cracking up. I'm new with social media. thanks for all great content.

Awesome - glad I could entertain and provide value at the same time. Thanks for the kudos.

Thanks Sean, Great video, I am going to apply the "cleanup" principles right now. I sent you a message regarding hiring you to help me with my launch. Look forward to hearing from you. All the best, Eric Keyes
